Bad weather blues

Not alot to report from around the Llyn with all this bad weather, but once the weather improves we should see plenty of whiting and codling back on the beaches.

Reports of whiting, dogfish, dabs and codling from the straits for those looking for a bit of shelter!!!

Fishing from Pwllheli

Hoards of whiting from Pwllheli beach to around 12"long this week, plus the odd bonus bull huss. Local charter boats catching codling, pollack, whiting and bass.

Summer Bass Fishing

There has been loads of school Bass this week, most taken on lures, Sea Bream to small bottom baits and Garfish to float fishing with thin strips of mackerel as bait, plenty of Huss and some good Tope for the boat anglers. Happy days :)

Wet & Windy "Again"

Another weekend of wet and windy weather!!! Theres still plenty of Mackerel and School Bass around from either the beach or boats if you can get out. Pwllheli beach is fishing very well with Bass, Bream, Rays and Garfish being taken...

Sunshine and Bass

Light winds and clear skies for the next few days, plus high tides around dawn and dusk, perfect for Bass and Bream fishing :)

Tope fishing should also be perfect for the boat angler as there are plenty of Mackerel in the bay, might even be worth trying for the Tope from the shore!!!

Bank Holiday winds!!

It must be bank holiday with these winds blowing SW up to 30mph!! But at least mondays looking good with light winds.

Had a few hours at far end of llanbedrog beach yesterday, theres a lot of weed on the beach but did manage a few small Huss and Dogfish, which wasnt bad on size 4 hooks fishing for Bream!!

Why is it that when the weekend comes its wet and windy, a few boats have been out and landed some nice mackerel and plenty of dogfish :)

Fished the harbour last night, 3 hrs of lure fishing a not a bite!! First time that Sidewinders have let me down this season!!! Loads of mullet showing, time to give them a try :)

First mackerel now in the bay!

The Mackerel are now starting to show, which is nice and early but please remember only take what fish you need to eat or for bait, the sea is a bottomless pit of fish, we need to look after our stocks for the next generation of fisherman to enjoy.

What a change a week makes, the holiday makers have gone home & the bass & flatties have arrived in numbers, heavy floating weed is still a problem but there are fish out there to be had, forecast for the week is abit windy for the boat anglers, but getting reports of tope from opposite Gimlet rock !!

Plenty of mackerel, school bass and dabs showing plus a very good run of pollock on the north side of the peninsula, and that is just from the mainland, boat anglers are taking tope, bass, good pollock, wrasse and even whiting anywhere from Bardsey to Abersoch.

Strong winds, rough seas and large amounts of floating weed havent helped the fishing this week but reports from the few boats that managed to get out have been catching pollack to 10lbs, coalfish and codling to 5lbs and bream to 3 lbs over the wrecks, however tope are very patchy.
From the shore lure angling has been hampered by the weed but bait anglers have been catching school bass, dabs, eels and dogfish at close range.

School bass showing up all over the place for the shore anglers and most of them coming to lures or small plugs
Loads of small mullet showing in and around the harbour but few people fishing for them which is a shame as they are a hard fighting fish.

With gin clear seas , clear skies and small tides, fishing has not been easy this weekend.

All the same, anglers have been catching mackerel, dogfish, pollack, bream, dabs, flounder, tope and even a specimen size shad (hopefully photo to follow)

The top photo shows Neil with a tope caught on board Haf Aled, and below that is John from Manchester with a personal best pollack, taken on a spinner.

Local charter boat report from Bardsey Island area today -

Pollock to 2.5lb, codling 3.5lb, cuckoo and ballan wrasse, dogfish and bream
The Pollock were caught on firetail jelly worms, and the codling came to baited feathers..

There has been a vast improvement in catch rates over the weekend for both beach and boat anglers, catches include bass, mackerel & pollack to lures, and bass, plaice, dogfish, bull huss & tope to bottom baits. Catches should remain constant throughout the week with good tides and fairly decent weather forecast.

We are getting lots of reports into the shop of catches, which are much appreciated, but would also really like a few comments, photo's and reports on here of how you are all getting on. We also welcome your questions and will help wherever possible.

We had some very happy fishermen out over the weekend who caught well in the beautiful weather and the Wildlife cruises are proving as ever, really popular. There are currently alot of amazing dolphins around in the bay which is a real bonus!
Plenty of trips are planned over the coming weeks, the bank holiday always proves to be extremely popular so it is best to book well in advance to avoid disappointment, but you can always try popping in or phoning at short notice to see what spaces are available.

(We now have a credit card facility available so can take phone bookings for the trips over the phone.)

Pwllheli Beach Open

This was one of the best organised matches that I've fished for a long time...
Shame the fishing wasn't as good, there were alot of blanks, flat calm sea, clean blue skies and extremely hot !!
Managed to win the best 'round fish' pool with a very nice garfish, float fished at range, 7" float fished waggler style at about 6' deep with half a small sandeel, which was the only bite I had !!
But will be trying the method out again on a nice summers evening walk down the beach.
A very friendly comp and looking forward to next years already .............

Its the Pwllheli Open this weekend, fishing on sunday 23/05/10, 2pm till 6pm, sign in at the cafe from 10am.
Good luck to all those that are going to fish this annual compertition.

As for myself I'm off down the beach tomorrow for a 4hr practise session, or is it 4hrs off work ??

The boats seem to have had a better time than the shore anglers, but the shore lads are picking up the odd bass....
Dogs, whiting, dabs, huss, pollack, a few mackerel and the odd codling from around the islands for the boat fisherman. Most fish coming to bottom fished baits, sandeel or mackerel bait.

Lures are starting to pick the odd bass up but more fish are coming to ledgered baits.
Peeler crabs should be starting to show this week, that would be my number 1 choice of baits for the next few weeks "IF" you can get some crabs.....

Days fishing on Haf Aled from Pwllheli

Should have been a flat calm days' Tope fishing !!!!

Strong winds and heavy rain -"great", the skipper of Haf Aled (Jason) had been out tope fishing all week and had had some good catches... Now it was my turn, time off work was granted but mother nature had other ideas.

The only place we could fish was in the shelter of the St Tudwals islands, but it actually turned out to be a very good day, we had Huss to 13lb, mac's, dogs, dabs, whiting and a few pollock, plus a spider crab which is in the pot boiling away for my tea tomorrow !!!!

Weekend tides

Good spring tides this weekend, hoping to see some bass landed, off for abit of tope fishing on friday, hoping for a 50lb-er, with any luck !!!

Early indications are that it should be a good mackerel season as mackerel are being caught already, albeit in small numbers.
